Notes - Riddle-poem I wrote back in '01 - what is it?

--

A plume of metal, silver and gold
A relief for some to see
My teeth are sharp and always bared
I'll be the one to take you home

I can be a maze with no end sometimes
Yet without me, you'd be lost
I am the way out, that simple code
That you keep close and in secret

But so many times you just throw me aside
I fall in the cracks of your world
Like a dusty penny - don't you care?
No, just turn to my newborn twin

You might think of me again
In desperation, in useless reflection
But in that minute, you can't reach me
And I won't come running to help
