The Message
No moon lit the midnight sky
Sun would appear by and by
Now I had to find my way
A long road before me lay

It was a fortnight ago
During the terrible snow
When a message came to me
A message that I would see

A message that made me think
It was written in black ink
The old paper was crinkled
The envelope was wrinkled

I tried to read the black print
But I could not get a hint
Who the devil it was from?
Where in the world did it come?

Then slowly it dawned on me
A message from Sara Lee
Was written on paper thin
From the town of Coppertin

I could see one word was quick
And another word was sick
Could it be that Sara Lee
Really, really needed me?

Hitching Dobin to the sleigh
I got on my merry way
Over hill and valley fast
How many horses have we passed?

On the road to Coppertin
We passed by many an Inn
Soon we need to stop and eat
Before Sara Lee we meet

I give Dobin hay to eat
I have something wheat and sweet
Hitched up Dobin. Now I know
We've not much farther to go

I see it now up ahead
Hurry now. Make fast the sled
Building large with larger sign
Says 'Sara Lee'. Come and dine

Sara Lee comes out to greet
Nearly knocks me off my feet
Asking if she sent for me
"Of coarse," she said, "come to tea"

The message was not a plea
And she didn't call for me
Dobin and I started home
Of which we will never roam.
