An Atheist at Christmas, by Leslie Thomson Subscribe to rss feed for Leslie Thomson

People ask me why,
I the atheist,
Should recognise Christmas.

I have had messages
Of hate and derision,
From other atheists
And some calling themselves Christian.

I ignore the bile and scorn;
A man named Jesus,
Was undoubtably born,
And by his example he defined,
How it should be for mankind.

And this one day in the year,
When we draw each other near,
Is all because one man unleashed,
A gentle message of  peace.

To tend the sick, feed the poor,
Comfort the afflicted and so much more;
And his Golden Rule still reamains true;
Treat others as you would have them treat you.

The example of Jesus continues to inspire;
So how could I not but help to admire
The message of this low-born man,
Who showed us all a better plan?

And so, I atheist, celebrate his birth.
And I join in the merriment and mirth.
For unlike those who revile me with their scorn,
Jesus the man, included all and turned away none.

So to all, whatever beliefs you may hold,
I raise a glass to you and embrace you all.
And send everyone a message of cheer,
And seasons greetings for this happy time of year.
