The Falkland History, by Robin Goodwin Subscribe to rss feed for Robin Goodwin

John Davis discovered this small group of Islands
That’s what the history books says.
He was the first of so many to pass near these shores
Way back in the sailing ship days.

He logged in his book,” For Britain I claim
This unknown land discovered by me”.
Fifteen ninety two, the year it was written
Then confirmed in the parliament for all to see.

For 200 years nobody cared for this land
Except used for some poachers that called while en-route.
Then along came the French, who made a bold claim
The Falkland’s are theirs and kicked the Brits out.

For several years the French they did rule
But then sold to the Spanish these Islands they claimed.
At about the same time the Spanish had taken
What we now call the Argentine land.

To make matters worse, Spain gave to this Country
The Falklands they bought through the French deal.
Britain was mad at what the Spanish had done
Their Islands from Great Britain, they were trying to
steal.

For many long years now our sovereignty’s been claimed
By the various parties involved.
And to this day the bickering is still going on
With no sign of ever being resolved.

The Argentine Junta took Britain to war
In eighty two when these Islands they invaded.
For seventy four days this war it was fought
Eventually the Argentine dictators surrendered.

But so long as the Argentines lay claim to this land
There will be sovereign disputes over this place.
kelpers have lived here one hundred and eighty years now
So they belong to us now, so go leave us in peace.
