I left my one and only today,
Holding her body close to mine,
Tears seeping down my scared face,
"I Love You Forever and Always."

I met my rifle today,
Grasping it tightly I fell in terror,
My knees buckling beneath me,
My head is screaming for reality.

I wrote a letter today,
"I’m being brave for you,
I’m always thinking of you,
I will love you forever and always."

I saw a spot of blue today,
The sky is always a mix of greys,
For one minute the sun was hot,
It soon vanished in the smoke.

I screamed in horror today,
Marching up the gravel graveyard,
Men holding their breath to hide the stench
Bodies of the innocent covered the road.

I cried for hours today,
So many memories haunting me,
There is no way to escape it,
They are always there lingering.

I heard one last gun shot today,
Clutching my chest in pain,
Images of her smile rush through my mind,
Her soft laugh disappearing.

I took my last breath today,
Not a breath of cowardice
But a breath of courage and bravery,
A breath of a proud soldier.

I wrote this for Rememberance Day.
